I really enjoyed going out and finding stuff to give to women who have had a rough life. I believe what we did was important and meaningful. Not that the other organizations we had to choose from were not very important and helpful in their own way, I just believe that by helping Exodus Cry it related to more of what we talked about in class. Especially, since we got to listen to Helen speak about what she does at Exodus Cry. I know for me personally that what Helen does and how she puts herself in dangerous situations to try and help these young women is inspiring. I aspire to be like her one day and hope that I can make a difference like she does. By us not using the extra money we had on an extra guest speaker and instead spending it on accessories for the women that Exodus Cry helps, I believe it helps us get more involved. We hear stories about how society treats others and how wrong it is, but most of the time nobody does anything about it. They get all worked up and maybe say they will do something, but never actually put their words into actions. By going out and buying shampoo, makeup, gum, and journals is putting things into action. It may not be very much, but it is a start. It shows we care and want to do something. That we are willing to sacrifice our time, money, and energy to do something for someone else. I think by picking an organization to donate money and supplies to is a great way to get people involved. I think this project is very worthwhile and should be continued every semester.

I was very excited when we decided to do our outreach project for exodus cry. This organization is very close to my heart and I have wanted to get involved to make a difference for many years and was excited to do a small part as a class. Going out and collecting small materials didn’t take much time or effort out of my day but was extremely heartwarming to know the impact it could make on another life. Many of the items we collected are common house hold items I believe we could have had a donation drive to contribute more if time allowed. Participating in this experience and learning about where our donations were going was important and I’m glad we got the opportunity to do so. I hope to stay plugged in with exodus cry and take part in more outreach opportunities. I’m very glad our class was able to hear from this company and learn about the effects of sex trafficking. I believe this helped us all relate alittle more in depth and have a better understanding of what to get when shopping. In the future I think it would be important to do more research on other outreach opportunities!

I am very pleased as a class we decided to do our final project for exodus cry when we could have chosen to listen to a speaker. I believe our small acts of kindness will help people in anyway possible. This is a great way for the community and Avila students to get involved and do some good. We were only given a certain amount of money that at the time did not seem like it would get us far but after seeing our items combined I knew we would be able to help many. I am happy that we helped this program, it is not known to a lot but we are making it more known just by this act. I think this project does great things for people and should continue to be apart of the class. Thank you again.
ReplyDeleteI was very excited to be able to do our community project for exodus cry. I think its a great organization and every since Helen came to speak to us it has touched my heart. Since I am not from KC, hearing about exodus cry really stood out to me. It felt good doing a small part in order to help these people dealing with things that have been saved. It didn't take much to go out and get little things in order to fill the bags. A lot of things are items that are common around and can help in many ways. When I went to Dollar Tree the lady asked me why I was buying a lot of nail polish and I was able to explain to her our project and I think it touched her heart just as much as mine. Participating in this community project really stood out to me and knowing about exodus cry and reading into to, I was filled with joy we picked exodus cry. I hope to further invest in helping organizations like exodus cry. Donation drive would be a helpful way to provide for this organization if more time were available. Sex trafficking is a serious matter and by doing this project and knowing the information Helen provided has opened my eyes. This is one the best things ive done this year at Avila.

I liked seeing people’s reactions whenever I said what I was getting woman products. I originally had to get help in Dollar Tree because I didn’t know what I should get that would be the best. She asked me, “What are you getting this for?” and I told her exactly what I was getting it for. I got seven makeup kits and seven makeup brushes. I was originally going to get 13 things that would only bring the total to 14.10, so I decided to get a 14th thing and have it be even. I then wanted to get 14 brushes and I realized that if the seven people got eye liner they could do eyeliner as well. Eyeliner is what these brushes are originally for but that doesn’t mean that they can’t use it for different things. The people that get the make up and the brushes can use eyeliner with one, use the makeup, and whatever other beauty product that they want. I thought it was real interesting that only the girls were filling the bags. I just didn’t want to be in anybody way. Whenever people are climbing on top of one another we have to choose whether or not to help. I enjoyed doing the project.
ReplyDeletei really liked this project because we helped so many women with a small amount of money, yet the entire class brought so many items for the project. it just shows how even a little can bring so much. this project made me feel good about myself because i got to go out and shop for women who deserve so many things and i wish i was there to receive them. i've done a lot of community service but i always love helping older people, not just children. because adults need help too and they are so thankful and it makes you feel happy for them. i think this community service project showed what we can do within our community to help others. it doesn't have to be a giant donation. even just a gift bag can have a huge impact on peoples lives. with these gifts these women have the opportunity to get all pretty and maybe go find a better job to support their family or go out and have a good night. everyone deserves nice things too. i saw really nice nail polish and face wipes. even face masks! i love face masks and these will definitely make these women feel relaxed and stress free. very excited for Exodus Cry to receive these gifts!
ReplyDeleteI am glad that we decided to do this community project as our final. I think it is important that we took what we learned to go out and help other people. It makes you realize that there are so many other people out there that have it worse than we do. Especially how these women are so grateful for these gift bags that are filled with items that I have considered essentials that I always have available. It did not even require that much money but the items that we were able to get with the money will definitely make a difference in their life. I really liked how we got bibles for them because you never know where they are at in their life, and maybe by reading the bible their life could be changed forever and the women could find something out there to find hope in. I have donated items in the past such as clothing, but I have never donated to Exodus Cry. Now in the future I will definitely consider it especially cause all the clothes I donate are women's clothing. I think this project should be continued in the future classes as it was really eye opening and makes a difference in the community.
ReplyDeleteIt is common knowledge to be able to understand that domestic violence is an on-going problem all over the world. Both men and women are trapped in relationships where they are constantly tormented by their significant other. Unfortunately many people in these situations have no where to turn. Luckily, there are domestic violence centers across the United States. Our whole class provided the women at Exodus Cry with things like makeup, soap, dental products, and many other basic items. I was happy to contribute to the shelter. I enjoy helping people as much as I can and it felt nice to go spend money on something bigger than myself. I hope the women at Exodus Cry overcome their current situation and in the meantime, enjoy our contributions.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed doing this project. I think this really helped open my eyes and show me that a lot of people take what they have for granted. I was very happy that we picked to use our extra money to help people that truly needed it. I'm glad that our class could be part of helping these women and giving them hope for a better life. It doesn't take much in order to show people that there are people out there that are willing to help but it is up to them to seek that help. This project also showed me that a little bit can go along way. If you look at the picture we each only got a little bit of money but when we worked together we were able to get a lot of different things and it can be that one thing that can show these women that there is hope.
ReplyDeleteI gained a lot from this Exodus Cry Project. First and foremost, it was comforting knowing that these gift bags went to well-deserved women and children who experienced an abusive routine. The project’s purpose was worthwhile and the cause was real and current. Our participation in this effort was important in a very large way because little impacts like these can change lives in a big way at times. I can imagine that these women and children have been through some horrific experiences and they deserve to feel important again and know that there are people looking out for their well-being and safety. Personally for me, the little things add up in a large way so its clear to assume that these victims of sex trafficking will have a great appreciation for being cared and sought after. I also believe including the entire class for a “do-good” project and cause can have a heart-warming impact in all our lives. I think the Exodus Cry organization in whole is a valuable outreach program that should receive more support to sponsor such needs for victims to make a positive impact in their lives after experiencing so much chaos. I would encourage this project to be implemented every semester.

After hearing our guest speaker, Helen speak on sex trafficking, it made this final project a little more closer to heart. Going out and shopping to find things that other people needed was humbling and a great experience for in and of its self. Being able to provide some sort of toiletrie and or gift was pretty heartwarming and just made me feel like I made a small difference in someone’s life. I feel like being involved with Exodus Cry was relevant to what we talked about in class and helped us get more involved with some of the issues that the world faces. I’m glad our class chose to get involved with an organization that helps with such a pressing issue. I hope to stay connected and involved with Exodus Cry during my time in Missouri and seek out opportunities to help out the community.

I am very honored to say that I was a part of something so special. The exodus cry project was an eye opener to all of us. Helen did a great job explaining her why in life and her message to us. Before this class I had no idea about any of these things. Once I saw we had the chance to interact and give to these victims I knew that was the option we had to pick. We put our differences aside and it brought us all together to help someone other than ourselves and to me that is so beautiful. Sex trafficking is a horrible thing and I wish it never existed. However, there are many terrible things going on that no one should go through but ignoring it is not an answer. Out of all the racism, feminism, and gendered media we talked about, Exodus Cry had the biggest impact on me. Seeing how passionate Helen was really made me realize how blessed I am to even be able to give back like we did. It seems so little to us and we wish we could do more but to the people we help it means the world.

I really enjoyed this project. Before Helen spoke to us about sex trafficking and Exodus Cry, I had very little knowledge of the topic. Once Helen explained what goes on in our everyday life and all of these things that happen to these children and women there was no doubt that I wanted to do something for them. Being able to provide for these women with very little made me feel like I was making a difference. I brought multiple bottles of shampoo and conditioner, face masks, eyeliner and mascara, and face wipes. Helping Exodus Cry was very beneficial to not only the women, but us as a classroom. It was similar to the things that were talked about in class on a regular basis. Overall, I really enjoyed this project and I think that this project should be continued in future classes. I'm really pleased that I could help out with such a great cause and I hope more people become more familiar with Exodus Cry.

I appreciate the Exodus Cry Project and hope that the receivers of the gift bags appreciate it just as much if not more. Doing this project made me feel like I was contributing something to the community and the class. I appreciate all the knowledge we discussed and learned about people, their lives, and the struggles they face and possible solutions of how to solve those problems throughout this semester of class. Learning about and discussing the sex trafficking and related topics really contributed to my sense of wanting to give back and better my environment and other people's environments because life is such a shared experience. When Helen Taylor spoke about the distresses faced by the women she comes in contact with in her line of work, it was very moving. There have always been warnings and things I would hear from adults but listening to the experiences of someone whose job is to help people cope with these ordeals and help them find peace and betterment brought so much awareness to me. It made me very grateful and also made me want to be even more cautious than I am. Doing this project made me feel like I was taking steps towards being a part of the solution because although major things are key, little things can also make all the difference.
ReplyDeleteI am glad and forever thankful that I had the opportunity to listen to Helen speak about what she's passionate about, being a part of Exodus Cry. I really enjoyed listening to her speak and it sparked something in me. I wanted to contribute somehow and help with what I can. So given the opportunity of making gift bags was a great opportunity. It made me realize that the little things always matter. We weren't given much money but we used what we had and came together to make little gift gabs for these women. Even though, I wasn't physically there to make the gift bags, it still felt nice to be able to go out to the store and buy things for women in need. I'm glad we did this project this year for Exodus Cry. Helping in any way is always good. I'm honored to have been a part of this project.
ReplyDeleteI was happy to help give back to the community that I live in. I especially was thankful to put our efforts towards Exodus Cry being that it was one of the topics/organizations we covered in class. I would’ve been happy to give to any organization but to be able to do something rather than just discussing was empowering. The information that we learned about sex trafficking as a whole made it an easy choice to vote for donating our time to Exodus Cry. The societal injustice of how women are forced or coerced into the sex industry is one that this class opened my eyes to. The fact that some accept this choice of going into the industry as viable and the instances where wrong people are penalized in relation to the issue makes it all the more important to address it personally. It was neat to see the class come together as a whole and focus on something that could positively affect others. I know that I was not able to see the direct application of our gift bags but seeing everyone put them together on the last day of class reassured me that we were making an impact on the community.

I am so thankful for the opportunity to learn about Exodus Cry through Helen's speech. I learned so much and it was really cool to turn words into actions. It was great to see the whole class go out and get things and pool our resources together for a worthwhile cause. Class discussions and readings are informative. But having Helen show us the real shoes of people who have been in sex trafficking opened my eyes to realization. These people are real. These people need someone to reach out and show them that they care. Our class coming together was something I've never experienced in the classroom setting. But I think that it is an essential part of learning: putting actions behind the words. In this Gendered Media course, I've learned a lot about all these problems occurring in America and around the world. It was nice to actually make a difference. Getting items to put into gift bags was a great idea. I hope other classes have the opportunity to do something like this in the future!
ReplyDeleteI actually enjoyed this community project. When Helen came to speak to the class about her job, it really interested me and opened up my eyes even more to what’s actually going on in the world. It’s crazy how there are women who actually go through all of those difficult times. When I was getting the things at the store, I found myself wanting to get more for the women because why not? If we have all of these extra privileges and are able to help them or anyone else in the world, even by a little bit, we should do it. When we returned to class with the things we bought, I was glad to see that there was so much stuff for these women. It was good to know that the things were going to a well deserved place. I like how this class gave us an opportunity to donate to Exodus Cry. Situations, such sex trafficking and other worldwide problems, are hardly heard of and this project should be continued for future semesters so other students can have this experience. It can encourage us to look into other situations and see what we can do to help.

I am so thankful for the opportunity to learn about Exodus Cry through Helen's speech. Doing this project made me feel like I was taking steps towards being a part of the solution. Helen was so passionate about her work, and our class being able to do something to help her along with those women made me feel like I was making a difference, even if it was something small. Little things can also make a big the difference. These people need someone to reach out and show them that they care, and we got to be one of those people, and I will forever be grateful. I think this project does great things for people and should continue to be apart of the class. If given the chance to be apart of volunteering for Exodus Cry, or any of the other organizations, I would not hesitate. Being able to make a difference in someone else's life meant so much to me, and I'm so happy I got to be apart of something so special.
