Hope House Contributions

The spring 2019 Gender Media class voted to give donations to Hope House, a local domestic violence shelter. Thanks for participating in the project.

Today the class had an opportunity to hear from Jen Green about her work with survivors of sexual assault and other traumas.

Guest Speaker - Helen Taylor

Helen Taylor of Exodus Cry spoke to the Gender Media course about the sexual exploitation industries - sex trafficking, prostitution, and the porn industry - and the ways in which these industries operate world-wide.

Great group of students in this semester Gender Media course, who collected 29 stuffed animals to give to the children of Sunflower House, a non-profit organization with a mission to protect children from physical or sexual abuse.

Jennifer Green, a forensic nurse, speaking to our class about sexual trauma. Jen shared insights from her extensive experience with victims of rape and domestic violence. 

Guest Speaker - Dasha Gajic

Today we heard from Avila's activist-in-residence, Draga Dasha Gajic, who is visiting from Banja Luka in Bosnia-Herzegovina. She is the author of three books in the field of Gender Studies, Women's history and women's heritage, as well as a book in the field of photography and street style.She is currently the Executive Directory of an NGO in her hometown, working with women and disabled youth. Pictured with the class in Thornhill Gallery, where her photography is currently being exhibited.
